What’s up guys, I am back again with a fresh article to discuss how to start a blog in 2020.
In this article I will seek to answer the questions that a lot of my readers, non-blogging friends and colleague have always asked about how they can start their own blog and become a successful blogger.
Without wasting much time, I want to go straight down into explaining how you can go about starting your own blog in 2020 and become successful at it.
As you most likely already know, there are millions of blogs on the internet today, of which hundreds of thousands of them are quite successful, making huge sums of revenues monthly while also commanding very strong authority in their respective niches.
This topic will be divided into 3 parts, which will seek to comprehensively discuss the subject at hand. The parts are:
- The groundwork
- The psychological work
- The practical work
A perfect combination of these three will most definitely lead you to success in blogging, which of course is the ultimate purpose of this whole article in the first place.
1: The groundwork
Before you start blogging, you first have to plan and prepare your approach and strategy to run a successful blog.
You have to decide which niche you want to focus on, you have to plan your target audience and how you want to reach them, you will also need to decide what kind of content you want to create, how often you want to publish content and how you would like to monetize your blog, if you intend to monetize it on the long run.
All these together will make it easy for you to be able to launch on the right foot and avoid being in situations where you’re lost and out of ideas.
Let’s take it one by one and explain in more details all these above mentioned points.
How to Choose a Niche
Choosing your niche is no doubt the most important action you have to take before starting a blog.
I have seen a whole lot of people that start their blogs and just jump into it without defining a niche for themselves, so they do just about anything they feel like doing or find interest in.
I have seen many blogs that have sports, news, health, fitness, food recipes, politics, entertainment, fashion, showbiz etc. all in one same blog.
This is something I will never recommend anyone to do as, it shows just how unserious or low-quality the content of that blog might be, except in cases where some blogs have done it and become successful.
In-fact I am not saying it’s won’t work, yes it might work out for you and you will have a successful blog, but truth be told, the chances are very slim, allow me to explain.
When most people go online to search for stuffs that they need, they are always more convinced of blogs that focus around the specific topic they are searching for.
So, imagine that you are seeking for reviews on the latest Samsung galaxy S20 smartphone.
They you find 2 blogs, one of them has the review but also on the blog, there are lots of unrelated posts from fitness, entertainment etc. the the other blog is specifically focused on smartphone articles among which you can the Samsung galaxy S20 review you are looking for.
Which of the 2 blogs will you subscribe to so that they can become you go to place for any new phone reviews? Let me tell you, it’s the latter blog with its entire article related to smartphones.
That’s because you already feel like you can trust them and the writers most likely knows the industry they are writing about.
This is the primary reason why you should choose a niche first and be very ready to create unique content around the niche.
It also helps to have a specific niche as this helps you to rank faster on search engines and build your authority very fast.
To choose a niche for your blog, you have to consider how easy it will be for you to create content for the blog.
Most times it is best to choose a niche where you have a whole lot of knowledge and experience.
You can also choose a niche that you have a much passion for, a niche that you can never get tired of. By doing this, you are setting yourself up for a great launch.
Decide Your Target Audience
Once you have chosen a niche for your blog, it is now time for you to define your target audience, which set of people are your main target audience, what are their demographics and how do you plan to reach them with your content.
We already know millenials are the most gadget enthusiastic, so you might want to target your content millenials and how can you reach them to see your content?
SEO is basically out of your reach in terms of demographics control, so you already know you have no say over that and just about anyone can visit your blog.
But you can decide to use social media where you know you can intelligently target an audience based on their demographics.
You might also be thinking of ads on social media to achieve faster results. Some of the best social media drive traffic to your blog include Facebook, twitter, Flipboard, Pinterest.
I will discuss how to make good use of these social networks in a subsequent post.
Define Your Content
After deciding on your audience you also have to decide which content types you would like to publish on your blog.
The traditional approach to blogging is by posting textual content and a few images to accompany it. But times have changed and blogging has evolved too.
These days, we have more content types that you can publish on your blog to add additional value to your content. You can publish articles with images, videos and even voice recordings or podcasts.
A lot of bloggers have found massive success doing all these together. They publish texts on their blogs, videos on YouTube and embed it into the blogs, they also have podcasts and voice recordings to spice up the whole experience.
Humans as we already know love variety we get very bored of things very fast, but when you publish other content types, you give your audience the sense of participation and immersion.
They will definitely feel part of the experience and they can relate better and understand the message of the content.
It will also be an avenue for you to leverage on the exponential possibilities that sites like YouTube possess.
You should also have a plan for your publishing times, you can choose a specific day and time of the week to publish a particular content type.
For example, you can choose to publish your videos on Wednesdays at 10am. This makes it easy for your readers to follow your content while also anticipating the next publication.
